Description:
Brookline, MA: David R, Godine SCARCE a haunting and prophetic broadside, Whitman's words written in 1871 following the Civil War as relevant today as then. 22" w x 30 1/2" h, featuring a 20" w x 19/12" h photogravure, printed by Joh. Enschede, Zonen, Haarlem, Holland, portraying Walt Whitman in profile, enlarged reproduction of 1891 photograph of Walt Whitman by Thomas Eakin at head of text. Underneath, the quote, taken from Whitman's "Democratic Vistas": " We have frequently printed the word Democracy. Yet I cannot too often repeat that it is a word the real gist of which still sleeps, quite unawaken'd, notwithstanding the resonance and many angry tempests out of which its syllables have come, from pen or tongue. It is a great word, whose history, I suppose remains unwritten, because that history has yet to be enacted. It is in some sort, younger brother of another great and often-used word, NATURE, whose history also waits unwritten. WALT…

[Vintage Poster:] AMERICAN AIRLINES NIAGARA FALLS AND CANADA
by Kauffer, Edward McKnight
- Used
[NP: American Airlines, 1954. Folio. Color photolithographed poster (40 x 30"; 102 x 76 cm). Trivial use and a few minuscule edge tears confined to the extreme edges of the blank margins, otherwise a near fine, fresh example. A vintage, unrestored example of the distinguished series of original poster designs Kauffer created for his primary American client beginning in 1947, and continuing up until his death in 1954.

Description:
ca. 1935. Very Good. Printed bill, 35 x 50 cm. Blue ink on paper. Restored and laid down. The propaganda war against Francos forces in Spain was fought largely with posters. These were pasted up on walls in the night at great risk not only to those putting them up, but to the printers, artists, and organizers, too. The Socorro Rojo Internacional (S.R.I.), a creation of the Communist International Congress of 1922, was intended to function as a support and aid organization (providing soup kitchens, medical care, etc.) but also propagandized energetically. This poster declares War unto Death! To the provocateur, the spy, to anyone who sows discontent and fear. Lets end the Fifth Column. The little figure is composed of multiple eyes and antennae, keeping watch and listening. Such posters were willfully destroyed, and surviving examples are rare.

"The whole present system of the officering and personnel of the army and navy of these States, and the spirit and letter of their trebly-aristocratic rules and regulations, is a monstrous exotic, a nuisance and revolt, and belong here just as much as orders of nobility, or the Pope's council of cardinals. I say if the present theory of our army and navy is sensible and true, then the rest of America is an unmitigated fraud. Walt Whitman". There are over 150 items, stuck neatly into a large folder, the spine of which is now breaking. Comprising: 24 real mono photographs (12 from the Clown act and 12 from a Luton Grammar School gymnastic display which was choreographed by Squire), One large poster, circa 40 letters and telegrams, circa 60 programmes and show bills, circa 25 newspaper cuttings. The earliest items here are a photo dated 1926 and a flyer from 1928, and the latest seems to be 1972 on a large poster from Girvan. Working for the most part as Clown Bobby and Evelyn, His real name was Robert Squire, hers was Evelyn Wrensted.
