Description:
Viking Press, NY [1973]. Hard Cover. First published Paris, 1971. Of the 'generation which proclaimed itself 'decadent'... Gabriele d'Annunzio alone succeeded in living his wildest dreams: ugly, he was irresistible; a petty bourgeois, he became a prince; a worldly aesthete, he was a hero and dictator. This he achieved because of his prodigious vitality, certainly, but also because, absolutely sure of his own genius and quite untremmelled by scruples or by a sense of humour, he embodied the myth of the closing nineteenth century, the Nietzschean superman with the heroism and the crudity inherent in that concept.' xviii, 366 p., index, plates; 22 cm.; dj; ex library but scarcely read; VG. 30584

Description:
Washington, Library of Congress, 1952. Mrs. Coolidge recalls her patronage of chamber music and the establishmernt of the Berkshire Music Festival in Pittsfield, MA. This copy is inscribed "To dear Mrs. Koussevitski Lenox July 26th 1952." This would have been Serge Koussevitsky's third wife (his first one, married during his student days and discarded when wealthy Natalia appeared, is conveniently forgotten in most biographies), Olga Naumoff K. (1901-1978). The monied wife, Natalia Ushkova K. (b. 1880), had helped Serge Koussevitzky established HIS Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood in Lenox. She died in 1942, Serge married Olga in 1947, and died in June 1951, so he could have heard this talk. A great association copy for Berkshire music. Soft Cover. 14 pages; 23 cm. Vg/ wrappers. "Th story of Vitruvian Man is actually two stories: one individual and one collective. The individual story, of course, is Leonardo's own... how [he] came to draw his famous picture... The second story unfolds on a much broader scale. It's the story of how Vitruvian Man first came into being as an idea more than two thousand years ago and then slowly made its way across the centuries toward its fateful encounter with Leonardo. It's a saga of grand proportions..." 275 pages, illustrations including color; 23.5 cm. Very Good in VG pictorial dust jacket. Stock#ofc0648.
