Description:
New York, Late 1940s to 1971. A collection of approximately 2,000 photographs and negatives, taken by African-American independent photographer Malcolm Downes Thomas (c. 1900 - c. 1972) from the late 1940s to 1971. Thomas photographed various aspects of New York City street and family scenes in both Manhattan and Harlem, Eastern Long Island landscapes and wildlife and a variety of images taken on various Caribbean islands. The collection also includes over a hundred original photographs and negatives of Bettie Page in a private session taken in 1952. In its entirety, this collection represents a vision of nature, street scenes, human interest, and erotica as seen from the perspective of an affluent African-American. Thomas focused his photographs of human subjects on his fellow African-Americans, taking not only numerous study series of portraits but also spontaneous shots of everyday life. Children playing, people watching television on the couch, and social gatherings are all represented. New… Read More

Description:
Paris; Neufchastel [Neuchatel]: Briasson, David, Le Breton, Durand; Samuel Faulche & Compagnie, 1751 - 1772. First Edition. Hardcover. A complete 28-volume set of the true first edition of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert's Encyclopedie, comprised of 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates. The text volumes were published between 1751 and 1765, the first seven listing Paris as their place of publication, and the remaining 10 volumes (all released in 1765) stating "Neufchastel". The titlepages of the text volumes include accent marks. These accord with the standard points for a true first edition. All 2,885 of the original plates appear to be present. Some bibliographies count the double-, triple-, etc. plates as multiples (rendering a count of 3,129 plates). The figure "2,885" reflects the numbering of the encyclopedists themselves and represents the total of originally included plates (See Darnton, The Business of Enlightenment). All text volumes are double-columned. All 28 volumes… Read More

New York, 1912-1915. Hardcover. A scrapbook and associated ephemera relating to the lives and deaths of Isidor (February 6, 1845-April 15, 1912) and Ida (February 6, 1849-April 15, 1912) Straus, who died aboard the Titanic, including an autograph letter signed by Ida Straus to her granddaughter Beatrice. Isidor was, with his brother Nathan, co-owner of Macy's department store and a U.S. Congressman; both he and his wife were prominent and wealthy members of New York City's Jewish community and philanthropists particularly interested in questions of education. The Strauses took passage aboard the Titanic to travel back to New York following a winter spent largely in southern France, and both died when the ship struck an iceberg on April 15, 1912. Famously, Ida was offered a seat in one of the lifeboats, but refused to be separated from her husband. Their deaths, and particularly Ida's love of and loyalty to her husband, became a subject of numerous newspaper pieces, poems, and songs in the months… Read More

He was the first important American Romantic painter, and was called the "American Titian." Allston's paintings are known for their bold use of light and atmospheric color. His artistic genius was much admired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Some years after Allston's death, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote: "One man may sweeten a whole time. I never pass through Cambridge Port without thinking of Allston. His memory is the quince in the drawer and perfumes the atmosphere." Allston's paintings have been widely exhibited in museums, most notably at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Unsigned and undated, marked "W. Allston" on verso. In wooden frame. Very Good minus.
