Pumpkin Moonshine is the first published work by celebrated children's author and illustrator, Tasha Tudor. The book was written originally for her niece, Sylvie Ann, and tells the tale of a young girl and a runaway pumpkin who was later turned into a jack-o-lantern, otherwise known as a moonshine.

First Edition Identification

Pumpkin Moonshine was first published in 1938 by Oxford University Press. The first edition were printed with a calico polka-dot cover, and Pumpkin Moonshine was the first of five in the "Calico Series" that Tudor would author.

The first edition illustrations were modeled on author Tasha Tudor's niece, Slyvie Ann, who also served as inspiration and lead character for the book.

The book was intended to be enjoyed by child readers, so the first edition was printed to size at 4 3/4 inches by 4 inches. Later board and hardcover editions would be printed at larger sizes.
