The Awakening: and Selected Short Stories Paperback - 2017

by Kate Chopin

About this book

The Awakening by Kate Chopin is an important work. Published in Chicago in 1899, this is often hailed as a precursor to modern feminist literature.

“She was becoming herself and daily casting aside that fictitious self which we assume like a garment with which to appear before the world.”

From the publisher

The story of this 1899 novel takes place in New Orleans and on the Louisiana Gulf coast at the end of the 19th century. The plot centers on Edna Pontellier and her struggle between her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century American South. It is one of the earliest American novels that focuses on women's issues without condescension. It is also widely seen as a landmark work of early feminism, generating a mixed reaction from contemporary readers and critics.

First Edition Identification

Chicago, 1899, bound in pale green cloth, decoratively stamped in dark green and red; top edge gilt.
