Description:
Athens, 2019. Bilingual (Greek-English) critical edition. Soft cover, 21 cm, 184 pp., ISBN: 978-618-5423-01-8.Theodore II Doucas Lascaris (1222-1258) was the only son of the emperor Ioannes III Doucas Vatatzes. Since his grandfather, was also named Theodore, died when junior was born, he got from him the last name Lascaris while keeping the surname Doucas from his father's side. His life unfolded in 13th century Nicaea, the city where, after the Fall of Constantinople to the crusaders in 1204, Byzantium had relocated, both politically and culturally, and actually bloomed to such an extent as to be at times referred to as the "New Athens". After the death of his father he ascended the throne in 1254 and held this title till his untimely death in 1258 at the age of 36.
