The Blue Castle Paperback - 2013

by L. M. Montgomery

About this book

The Blue Castle is a novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, best known for her novel Anne of Green Gables (1908). One of Montgomery's first and only novels intended for an adult audience and the only one set outside of Prince Edward Island, The Blue Castle tells the story of Valancy Stirling, a twenty-nine year old spinster, who lives a drab life with her overbearing mother and prying aunt in the fictional town of Deerwood, based on Bala, Ontario. After visiting the doctor because of chest pains, Valancy receives word that she has only a year to live. As she expands her limited horizons, Valancy undergoes a transformation, discovering a new world of happiness. What may initially seem to be a simple and uncomplicated love story offers fertile ground for contemplation.

From the publisher

Valancy Stirling is 29 and has never been in love. She's spent her entire life on a quiet little street in an ugly little house and never dared to contradict her domineering mother and her unforgiving aunt. But one day she receives a shocking, life-altering letter?and decides then and there that everything needs to change. For the first time in her life, she does exactly what she wants to and says exactly what she feels.

At first her family thinks she's gone around the bend. But soon Valancy discovers more surprises and adventure than she ever thought possible. She also finds her one true love and the real-life version of the Blue Castle that she was sure only existed in her dreams...

Charming, witty, and moving, The Blue Castle is perfect for readers looking for: classic books for teens, escapist fiction, romance books.

The story is set during the 1920s in the fictional town of Deerwood, located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada. Deerwood is based on Bala, Ontario, which Montgomery visited in 1922.
