The tombs were excavated by Georgiou in 2000/2001 and 2011. The Xylotymbou material richly demonstrates the liveliness, international contacts and wealth of Cyprus in the Archaic period, when the kingdoms of the island enjoyed relative peace and political independence. The tombs of Phlasou, in contrast, reflect a period of political instability as the kingdoms of Cyprus, now under Persian rule, fought either for independence from the Persians or against each other to win the favour of the Persians.
