About This Item
New York: Random House, 1986. First edition other then the limited Franklin Mint printing. 8vo, black pressed-paper boards backed in navy buckram, with the original dustjacket. 210. A fine copy, the jacket with very minor edgewear. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREAT PERSONAL EXPRESSIONS OF OUR TIME. This is Angelou's continuation of the narrative started with I KNOW WHY THE CAGE BIRD SINGS. As in that earlier book, with 'Traveling Shoes' Angelou upholds the long tradition of African-American autobiography. At the same time she makes a deliberate attempt to challenge the usual structure of the autobiography by critiquing, changing, and expanding the genre. Angelou had matured as a writer by the time she wrote Traveling Shoes, to the point that she was able to play with the form and structure of the work. Even though 'Traveling Shoes' is Angelou's fifth book in her series of autobiographies, it is able to stand on its own and be enjoyed independently from the others.
