  • Used
A collection of original drawings on 13 thick folio paper sheets (c. 525 x 350 mm) with watermark J. Whatman Turkey Mill 1834, of which 9 water colour and 4 pen and ink drawings. All of them with calligraphed Russian captions or headings. No place (Moscow or St. Petersburg) 1835. Loosely contained in a cont. Russian green morocco portfolio. Both covers with a broad gold frame of roll tooled floral stamps, with an inner rectangle ruled in gold with floral corner pieces. Paste-downs and inner flaps lined with red silk. An exquisitely hand coloured and precisely rendered collection of drawings related to technical aspects of the Russian artillery in 1835. Three sheets with drawings all of them delicately hand coloured include members of the Russian armed forces handling military equipment e. g. the rolling of a shell gun onto a carriage ; the loading and shooting with a shell gun over the parapet (so called "shooting through the bank"); and a method of installing the base of a swivel platform for shell guns. Six sheets with numerous drawings depicting hand coloured technical details of artillery equipment shown on the first three sheets, and 4 sheets with pen-and ink outline drawings of cannon barrels and ammunition and including tables comparing sizes. An excellently illustrated Russian manuscript on artillery in a well preserved contemporary Russian green morocco binding.

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
