SUMMARY:

In 1577, with the encouragement of Abraham Ortelius, Camden began his great work Britannia, a topographical and historical survey of all of Great Britain and Ireland. His stated intention was to "restore antiquity to Britaine, and Britain to his antiquity". The first edition, written in Latin, was published in 1586. It proved very popular, and ran through five further editions, of 1587, 1590, 1594, 1600 and 1607, each greatly enlarged from its predecessor in both textual content and illustrations. The 1607 edition included for the first time a full set of English county maps, based on the surveys of Christopher Saxton and John Norden, and engraved by William Kip and William Hole (who also engraved the fine title page). The first English language edition, translated by Philemon Holland, appeared in 1610, again with some additional content supplied by Camden.

Britannia is a county-by-county description of Great Britain and Ireland. It is a work of chorography: a study that relates landscape, geography, antiquarianism, and history. Rather than write a history, Camden wanted to describe in detail the Great Britain of the present, and to show how the traces of the past could be discerned in the existing landscape. By this method, he produced the first coherent picture of Roman Britain.

Britannia was recognized as an important work of Renaissance scholarship, not only in England, but across the European "Republic of Letters". Camden considered having the 1586 Britannia printed in the Low Countries, and although that did not happen, the third edition of 1590, in addition to its London printing, was also published the same year in Frankfurt, and reprinted there in 1616. In 1612 parts were condemned by the Spanish Inquisition. An abridgement was published in Amsterdam in 1617 and reprinted in 1639; and versions of the text were also included in Joan Blaeu's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (published in Amsterdam in 1645) and in Jan Janssonius's Novus Atlas (again published in Amsterdam, in 1646).

BACKGROUND:

William Camden (2 May 1551 in London – 9 November 1623 in Chislehurst) was an English antiquarian, historian, topographer, and herald, best known as author of Britannia, the first chorographical survey of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Annales, the first detailed historical account of the reign of Elizabeth I of England.

CONDITION:

Condition is Good/Very Good. Wear to edges/boards/hinges, some loss of leather to extreme corners/colored over, a lot of surface wear to boards, some glue added to front hinge, color added over hinges, hinges holding well, would handle with care.

Visual cracking to front hinge, some depressions to pages in the beginning, additional engraved title page trimmed/laid down on second blank, maps are excellent, small hole to upper margin of map of Scotland touching the neatline, just a few small margin blemishes, dedication page before main title page has a wrinkle, small tear at gutter near bottom, few rough edges, otherwise pages are very good/excellent, written title and "9" to upper page edges when closed, text block is very good for 410 years old!

Description:
1664 1st ed NEW YORK George Downing Discourse on DUTCH Settlements Indians 2v
Two exceedingly rare first editions of George Downing's defense of New York!
George Downing was an Irish preacher and political apologist known for his service under Oliver Cromwell in Scotland. In 1664 he wrote a short political letter describing the details of his arrangement of the acquisition of New York from the Dutch. 'A Discourse', as it is called, was written to clear his own name from any misconduct in the exchange. One of the most notable discussions in this work is a report on the miserable interactions of the Dutch settlers with local Indian tribes, as well as business and trade in New York. It should be noted that this work is considered one of the earliest works relating to New York in English! (Stevens).
A year after his first letter was written, he wrote his own reply – a work, which according to 'Rare Americana', was
"privately printed, and relates principally to the affairs of the English and Dutch West… Read More

Rebound in later black faux leather, with new endpapers, five raised bands to spine, gilt title, 'Infallible Guide', to cover, and date, 1689. pp. [i], title, [iv], imprimatur, [v-vi], contents, 132. A scarce copy of Hooper's second work, an apologetic in defence of the Anglican Church. Hooper had a more than accomplished academic record, being elected a scholar at St Paul's School, and subsequently granted a King's Scholarship at Westminster School. At Oxford he excelled in mathematics, while also learning good Hebrew and Syriac alongside Greek and Latin. In 1680 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles II. Subsequently made Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1704 to 1727. All of Hooper's works were published anonymously. The text of this states there are three discourses, but the book contains only two discourses; the… Read More

Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets… Read More
