Philadelphia and Baltimore: H. & P. Rice, and James Rice; Printed By Joseph Charless, 1801. First US edition, 1801, preceding the 1807 purported first American edition listed in Sabin 16915. Rough copy without covers and without the probable frontis portrait that was included in the 1807 edition. Calf spine, about 17cm tall, 204, [3], 1p. publisher's ad. Begins with title page (detached) with attached blank at end. Spine chipped, text block holding together, title page and blank age-toned and lightly chipped at the edges, remaining contents very good with light to moderate foxing, name of J. G. Whitehorne at top of title page.. First Edition. Disbound. Poor/No. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Topeka: Hamilton, Curl & Co., 1881. 283+ pages. Purple cloth covers with black stamped lettering and decoration. Cloth is rubbed along edges and shows some wear at spine ends. There is a horizontal, closed, tear across spine about two inches above foot. Cloth is a little faded over spine. Lettering and decoration on covers remains good. Text block is cracked near center, with one signature slightly sprung and two leaves just overlapping outside edge. Title page shows an inked inscription that has been heavily scribbled out, as well as another inked name and address, all in blank space around top portion of title. Date of publication on title page is underlined and there are two inked check marks next to date. Verso of title page is preface that also shows scribbled out writing in blank space. Contents show a few Xs in margins and a few underlines of entries. Despite faults, volume remains fairly tight and contents are otherwise very clean. . First Edition. Cloth - Hard Cover. Fair+/No Jacket.

J.R. Poinsett's "Cavalry Tactics" is a rare Civil War Union soldier's manual. Published from the United States War Department, this an enormous handbook with instruction on the basics of military engagement, duties of instructors and soldiers, mounting and preparing horses, loading arms while riding, guidelines for shooting while mounted, sabre exercises, how to march with your horse, and seemingly countless other topics pertaining to Union Cavalry.

While the text of this work is important, the numerous full-page engravings at the end – views of squadron formation, dress and costume, presenting arms, bugle call music, and much more!

This particular example contains a Civil War soldier provenance of a Maj. Samuel Pollack, 99th USC Infantry.
