Description

Japan, 1850. Very good. 1850s Woodblock Print by Utagawa Toyokuni III, aka Utagawa Kunisada, Japan, 1850s, 4.5 x 7 inches, 1 pp. One black ink woodblock print on thin paper; ink bright and clean; a few small holes to edges due to thinness of paper; mounted on white paper mat, seems removable with little to no damage; overall very good condition. Utagawa Toyokuni III, otherwise known as Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), was the most successful, prolific, and popular designer of woodblock prints in 19th century Japan. He produced some 20,000 ukiyo-e designs, which was an art style focused on kabuki theater actors, beautiful women, sumo wrestlers, and more; ukiyo-e translates as "picture[s] of the floating world". This woodblock print was produced in the 1850s. Nice collector's item.
