About This Item

viii, 374 p. ; ill. ports, plans (some fold.), diags. The author was Master Shipwright at Brest, and in 1737 was ordered by the French Minister of the Navy to go to England and Holland to study the construction of their ships of war. His highly detailed report, never before published, and here translated and edited by David Roberts provides a highly important comparative study of the French, English and Dutch navies of the early 18th century. The work is adorned by the author's own drawings plus photographs of models, and other contemporary illustrations. This book may incur additional shipping costs.
