About This Item

London: Royal Academy of Arts, 2000. Softcover. VG. Red wraps. 445 pp. Appx. 200 bw, 300+ color plates. Issued in conjunction with several 2000 exhibitions. Includes thought-provoking essays by Robert Rosenblum and MaryAnne Stevens and an illustrated biographies section profiling the more than 190 artists. The beautiful color illustrations are organized by subject-bathers and nudes, woman and man, portraits, social scenes, the city , interiors and still-lifes, etc., with each subject introduced by Ann Dumas. Within each section the works of "official" artists of the Paris Salon are juxtaposed with the works of "avant-garde" artists , bringing about unexpected relationships and challenging confrontations (paraphrased from the DJ).
