Description:
30 ll.Interesting French manuscript guide for travelling from Alexandria to Cairo, written by a Norman nobleman. The guide instructs the traveller to travel overnight from Alexandria to Atfeh (Al 'Atf) by way of a cangia (a type of passenger boat) over the Mahmoudiyah Canal. In Atfeh the traveller is advised to buy a marmite (a French cooking vessel), a casserole and several clay jugs for storing Nile water, before boarding a dahabeah (a large cangia) to Cairo. Among the activities suggested for Cairo is a visit to the cavalry school in Giza, where its director, the French colonel Varin, will receive the traveller like "a good Norman innkeeper". When visiting the pyramids, the traveller will be assailed by Bedouins “in an instant". If you desire to climb a pyramid, "address yourself to the Sheikh el-Beled and tell him to give you three men and to send away the others. A Bedouin will take you by each hand, another will push you from behind and in an instant you will be up". Also of interest is the… Read More

Description:
Rare Maynard Workshop Postcard of the New Old South Tower Copley Square Boston Massachusetts "THE CITY" POST CARDS is on a title block in the middle of blank back. There is a divided rule in the middle - one side for your message, another for the recipient's address. On the bottom is the tagline "FROM PHOTOGRAMS COPYRIGHTED BY THE MAYNARD WORKSHOP - WABAN - MASSACHUSETTS" The bottom left of the image has a very light c circled (the copyright symbol), beneath that is what appears to be "F and K" with a wavy line underneath with a small mark or dot under that. The card is unused, unstamped, undated. If you are a collector of Maynard Workshop cards, you know that they are hard to date. This card is circa 1920's or early 1930's. The image is of the Old New South Church. The original church was built in 1670, the second "version" in 1720, and the version in this postcard in built in 1873, which explains the "new." The church is… Read More

Description:
Lithographer: Donaldson Brothers for the Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Co.c. 1889
3" x 5" Chromolithograph. Minor closed tear to left margin, else v. good.
A colourful card showing the map of "Indian Territory" (Oklahoma) with vignette of natives hunting buffalo and a decorative arrow case. Area indicates different tribes such as the Choctaws, Chicasaws, Wachitas, Seminoles and Cherokees.

The Arbuckle Brothers Coffee Company was founded in Pittsburgh, PA by brothers Charles and John Arbuckle. Pioneering a method of roasting and "sealing" the coffee beans with egg whites, which ensured the longer shelf life, their product met with immediate success. As a promotional gimmick they began to include chromolithographed "trade" cards in their one pound bags with themes of sports, food, historic scenes and the most sought after of the series- maps. The advertising ploy proved to be hugely popular and by 1915 another series was issued showing updated populations and newly built roads and railroads.

Description:
London: Bemrose & Sons , 1881. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket (as published). 5.5" X 8.5. 39pp., A classic study on the origins of place names in the English county of Derbyshire. This copy has had a tough life, the spine strip is missing and both hinges are weak. The pages themselves are all soundly bound. The book includes some related ephemera, including a letter and several newspaper cuttings, mainly from the 1920s. (Includes the author's obituary). Some cuttings are stuck to the pages, but all text is still quite readable. There is the signature of a previous owner (William S Longbottom) at the top of the title page. William Longbottom was better known by his pen name of Horace Weir, the author of many works on the history of Derbyshire. Please note that this is a 19th century produced copy and not a modern reproduction. All orders processed and shipped promptly from the UK, usually within 24 hours.
