About This Item

Munich, Hermann, 1820-1833. . Landscape folio (40 x 54 cm); title-page with portrait of the artist and 24 lithographs mounted on thick paper, bound with a further 28 plates from a later work, some minor stains but overall very clean, marbled endpapers, a.e.g.; contemporary red morocco gilt, with gilt lettering to upper cover, edges rubbed and corners bumped.
Albrecht Adam (1786-1862) was the official artist of Napoleon's Grand Armée on its Moscow campaign of 1812. He travelled with the IV Corps in a group of cartographers and draughtsmen under Prince Eugène de Beauharnais. He wrote, sketched and painted whilst witnessing the horrors of battles such as Borodino, making it to Moscow before returning home to Munich in December. In Munich he produced numerous large scale canvases as well as engravings from his sketches. The present work is an early and scarce example of Adam's memorable journey across Europe, depicting vast landscape views, river crossings, prisoners of war and military camps.

There are no copies located on WorldCat. The plates from 24 croquis are as follows. They have been collated with the Catalogue des gravures et lithographies composant le fonds de J. M. Hermann (although not bound in the same order).
