First line

THE EARLIEST ANCESTOR of the modern piano is generally considered to be the instrument described in a 1700 inventory of the Florentine court as an arpicembalo che fa il piano e il forte (literally, the "harpsichord that can play quietly and loudly") and credited to Bartolomeo Cristofori, a Paduan harpsichord builder in the employ of a Medici prince.
