Description:
New York: Columbia University Press, 1941. Slipcase is quite worn, with the lower side being missing, the top part of inner (closed) side torn, and wear to the corners of the outer (open) side. The book itself has minor bumping to spine ends and corners, an old price in pencil on f/ep (66 rupees 8 annas which would have equated to £4 8/8 at the time), but otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover book. Looks at the hand- and arm-gestures (hasta prana and samyita) used in classical Indian dance and their meaning. The author, originally from Texas and called Russell Meriwether Hughes, studied dance in India in the 1930s. 100pp, over 200 b&w illustrations showing the different gestures. Also includes a small leaflet for a performance of Indian dance, no date but would be just post WW2.. Hard Cover. Good/Fair. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

NOTES ON THE PORO IN LIBERIA and MASKS AS AGENTS OF SOCIAL CONTROL IN NORTHEAST LIBERIA. by George W. Harley
(Hardcover)
Ethnos Publications, 2001
These two seminal studies by Dr. George Way Harley are the basis of our present day knowledge of the Poro men's secret society of West Africa and of masks and masking traditions in Liberia. Harley, a physician, traveled to Liberia from Durham, N.C., in 1926, cutting his way through the bush when there were no roads. He established a clinic at Ganta in Mano country near the Guinea border, and ministered to the needs of the people in the region for over three decades. Because of the trust placed in him by Poro secret society initiates, and through his anthropological training at Harvard, he slowly accumulated an immense knowledge and deep insight into the otherwise impenetrable secrets of the Poro.
Nearly impossible to find in their original, these classic works are presented together in this facsimile reprint. The two papers have been bound together… Read More

Some reprints, most first editions.Current Anthropology, whose first issue was launched in 1959, is one of the discipline's oldest and most distinguished journals, and has been sponsored since its founding by the Wenner-Gren Foundation. The journal was the first of its kind, championing an interdisciplinary approach alongside a commitment to international dialogue, while fostering a community of international scholars. It became known for its innovative format that combined major research papers with responses solicited from the field. The format, now known as the "CA treatment" was unique in its time and was copied by other journals such as Behavioral and Brain Sciences. While the journal has changed over the years, its original principles are still clearly present and can be traced back to the unique collaboration between the Foundation, led by Paul Fejos, and the…

They called themselves The People, but to nearly everyone else in their world they were known as The Enemy. And they earned the name in every respect. Seldom has any people fought harder for the preservation of their territory and their way of life. We know them today as the Apache, an ancient people who, in historic times, made a prolonged and desperate effort to drive the Spanish, the Mexicans and finally the Anglo-Americans out of their ancestral lands. Unsuccessful, they were placed in four reservations, on or near their original ranges in Arizona and New Mexico, some of the most ruggedly beautiful land in this country. There most of them still live, accepting the White ways yet keeping many of the old…
