New York: New Directions, 1998. Paperback. xxvi, 163p., introduction, foreword, characters, the play, very good first edition trade paperback original in black pictorial wraps. An early play (1938) by Tennessee Williams that was never produced nor published until 1998 when Vanessa Redgrave brought it to the attention of Trevor Nunn at the Royal National Theatre. The play is based on a newspaper account of a hunger strike by prisoners in a Pennsylvania prison who were locked in a steam-heated cell and roasted to death. Includes positive portrayals of gay and African American characters.
