London: Vernor, Hood, and Sharpe. Near Fine. 1809. Hardcover. One 5cm and one 10cm chip to top and bottom of spine. ; Hand written note laid in (initials, W. W. ) states: Academy for Grown Horsemen - twenty nine plates designed by Bunbury and etched by Rowlandson (as called for in the Directions to the Binder) . . . The twelve plates illustrating An Academy for Grown Horsemen are signed, H. Bunbury del - Rowlandson scul and are dated June 11 -1808. The plates illustrating the Annals of Horsemanship, except the first & fourth, are signed H. Bunbury del - Rowlandson - scul. And have Teggs [? ] -, dated May 4, 1808. These two works which are paged continuously, first appeared with Bunbury's illustrations in 1787 & 1791. These are the scarce plates as used in the Duodecimo (and first) edition, published in 1808. Smooth brown leather with gilt borders, and raised bands with gilt floral compartments; and gilt lettering and floral corners and borders over ruby red leather of that compartment. Inside covers have gilt floral dentrilles. Forest green endpapers. T. E. G. Pencilled note identifies Binder as Riviere. ; Hand-painted; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
