About This Item

Edinburgh, Archibald Constable, 1822. Two articles in two complete issues of The Edinburgh Philosophical Magazine (Nos. XI and XIII, January and July 1822) in 8vo and the original printed wrappers; pp. 107-111, one engraved map; 71-75, one engraved plan; the January issue with a little waterstaining towards the end affecting the map; otherwise very good, clean and largely unopened. First editions. Francis Hamilton was a Scottish surgeon and botanist who joined the East India Comapny and Captain Michael Symes' political mission to Ava in Burma, the first attempt of Britain to reach out towards the secluded kingdom. Both articles describe and reproduce maps received by Hamilton from a slave at Amarapura. He then discusses discrepancies between different native Burmese maps and relates them to Western geographical methods.
