Paris: Jean Gesselin, 1613. 8vo. [8],90,[1]pp. Lacks the world map, as is almost always the case. Titlepage vignette. Leaves A5 & A6 with a small, expert paper repair in lower margin, not affecting text. Twentieth century morocco bound to contemporary style, tooled and ruled in gilt, spine richly gilt Drake's Circumnavigation. The first French edition of Drake's circumnavigation, translated from the account inserted in the 1589 edition of Hakluyt's Principal Navigations. The text is traditionally attributed to Francis Pretty, though it is more likely that the information was compiled by Richard Hakluyt himself from three or more sources (see Wagner, Drake's Voyage). Wagner notes that the additional information found in this French edition but not in Hakluyt is "small but significant" and calls this "the most complete translation of all." Drake's circumnavigation was one of the most important events in maritime history, and this account must have been eagerly read by the French, who would not…

London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1773. 1st edition. Hardcover. charts and engravings. 4to. This is the first printing, first state, of the famous account of what is now described as 'Cook's First Voyage', although primary credit for the creation of this account is given to John Hawkesworth (who had been commissioned by the Admiralty to edit Capt. Cook's papers). Note: there was a second edition published in the same year, containing a Preface by Hawkesworth (Beddie 650). Volume I of our offering ends at page 676, and shows page 139 as numbered 139-360 (as called for in Beddie 648). It contains 18 of the 21 charts and plates called for in this volume, lacking two charts and one plate (or 'cut' as it is called). Volume II has a large tide mark across the top of the first third, or so, of the contents. Page 189 is misnumbered 191. Old worm hole to margins of pages 119-161. Contains 16 of 22 charts and plates (five folding charts, seven folding plates, and four single page plates). The text is complete…

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
