About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1994. Hardcover. Good/good. Published to mark the centenary of England's largest land- and property-owning charity, The National Trust. Formed in 1894, the Trust's aim is to preserve and/or restore fine examples of English architecture, as well as gardens, prehistoric monuments and stretches of coastline. This is a comprehensive study of the charity's growth, describing its internal wranglings, its dealings with the government, and its cast of sometimes eccentric people who have been part of its life, from Beatrix Potter to G.M. Trevelyan and George Nathaniel Curzon to Vita Sackville-West. Along the way we are introduced to some beautiful historic buildings and other treasures. Contains 369 pages, 24 x 16cm, with 36 colour and b&w photos, plus maps on endpapers. Ex-library with some library markings. Blue cloth boards in good pictorial dust jacket. Internally, good: clean, bright and unmarked in sound bindings.
