About This Item

[New York: The Barnes Printing Company], 1909., 1909.. Very good. - Octavo, 8-1/2 inches high by 6 inches wide. Softcover, bound in printed cream wrappers decorated with a prancing horse and a green rubber tree leaf, in the original glassine dust wrapper. The edges of the glassine are slighly chipped. 48 deckle-edged pages with a photographic frontispiece picturing the guests at the dinner seated around a large table decorated with candles and plants. There is a rust stain to the top of the first page from the paper clip which held the toastmaster Samuel P. Colt's card. Very good.

First (only) edition.

Laid in is the Metropolitan Club card of Samuel P. Colt who served as the toastmaster at the dinner. Colt (1852-1921) formed the United States Rubber Company. Among the toasts given at the event was "Insurance and Banking" by Paul Morton (1857-1911), the 36th Secretary of the Navy, "Tariff and Currency" by Rhode Island Senator Nelson W. Aldrich (1841-1915), "Law and Business" by Francis Lynde Stetson (1846-1920), President of the New York State Bar Association, "Rubber and Canada" by Douglas Lorne McGibbon, the chief benefactor of a tuberculosis sanatorium in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec, and "Judiciary and Commerce" by LeBaron Bradford Colt (1846-1924), a Rhode Island senator.
