California, 1941. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition. Oblong quarto. Spiral-bound clear acetate covers. Black and white photography. Slight waviness, rubbing, and toning on the covers else near fine. A promotional photography book advertising Adohr Milk Farm products with modernist-style photography by Larry Champagne. Over 16 pages the farm, cattle, and milk processing is displayed with landscape views of the dairy farm, workers bottling milk, and even a small child reaching for the bottle from her family refrigerator. A close-up of the bottling process shows an expiration date of 1941. Adohr Milk Farms began in 1916 in the San Fernando Valley by Merritt Anderson and boasted their use of their award winning "Guernsey milk cows." The company was named for Anderson's wife Rhoda who used her name spelled backwards. The 1940s saw Adohr at the height of their popularity often advertised as "the largest dairy farm in the world." This book was used in part to show Adohr's emphasis on cleanliness and safe working environments. Each bottle of milk contain a printed guarantee which read, "On every Certified Bottle is this guarantee of purity. Certified Milk is produced clean, kept clean and delivered clean. No other milk is produced under such rigid and far-reaching regulations." A wonderful collection of promotional photography advertising an important California dairy farm.
