London: Chatto & Windus, 1956. First UK edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 285pp. Octavo [20 cm] Bright chartreuse cloth over boards with the title and decorative borders stamped in blue on the backstrip. Publisher's blue topstain. The spine ends are a bit bruised. In the dust jacket, with mild toning (most visible on the rear panel and the inside flaps) and several small closed and open tears along the bottom edge. Not price-clipped. A book of essays with a diversity of subjects, such as the sin of the intellect, the confusion of knowledge with understanding, and the difficult art of being charitable. In Salt Lake City, he muses on the relation between music and popular taste ("Faith, Taste and History").
