About This Item
London: Jarrolds. 92pp. 12mo. Cream coloured cloth with gold gilt lettering stamped to the spine. Illustrated with eight b/w plates from photographs by Grenfell and others. Some rubbing along the edges of the boards. The head and tail of the spine are lightly bumped. Some soiling to the cloth and minor toning to the spine. Occasional foxing throughout. A small "Grenfell Association" sticker on the rear pastedown. Previous owner's inscription on the verso of the ffep. Inscribed by the author on the ffep with a wonderful little drawing of the "Hospital Steamer, Strathcona". Overall, a very good copy. This is the UK edition of Grenfell's account of a night adrift with his dog-team along the Labrador coast, with a biographical sketch by Clarence John Blake. Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell (28 February 1865 Ñ 9 October 1940) was a medical missionary to Newfoundland and Labrador. Beginning with Vikings of To-day (1895), he published between 1905 and 1938 a succession of books about Labrador, which was at the time a British colony.
