Boston: The Collins Press, 1894. First edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. The author's account of seven years' experience on board a whaler, and gold mining in California, Australia and British Columbia from 1849 through 1858. In the first section on Australia, Williams (born 1824) provides detailed insight into life in the early days of the colony, and includes his experiences in the bush, kangaroo hunting, and the habits, characteristics and anecdotes of the Australian natives.
Williams returned to Australia after a stint at gold mining during the California Gold Rush, and describes Bendago, striking rich diggings, miners' tax agitation, a visit from bushrangers, and compares conditions in mining camps in California to those in Australia.
Tall 8vo, x, 308pp, frontispiece photographic portrait; numerous text illustrations. Gilt stamped dark maroon cloth.
