About This Item

George Newnes,, 1892. 8vo., First Edition, with numerous illustrations in the text, wanting front free endpaper, half-title and title; original publisher's binding of pictorial blue cloth, upper board and backstrip blocked and lettered in gilt and black, bevelled boards, primrose endpapers, red sprinkled edges, a very good, bright, clean copy. Contains the thirteenth Holmes short story 'The Adventure of Silver Blaze' (pp.645-656), later collected as the first tale in the 'Memoirs' (1893). It also includes 'A Day with Dr. Conan Doyle' (pp. 182-188), an extended interview by Harry How with nine photographs by Elliott & Fry. Of additional interest to Holmesians is the fact that How's interview is followed by 'A Nightmare of the Doldrums' (pp. 189-198) by W. Clark Russell. It will be remembered that Watson was a particular fan: at the opening of 'The Five Orange Pips' he is 'deep in one of Clark Russell's fine sea stories'. De Waal 357; see Green & Gibson, pp. 71-77 (Holmes) and p.505 (Doyle).
