G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No jacket. Vintage Hardcover with related ephemera, First Edition. 1928 G. P. Putnam's Sons. New York. 83 pages. Good, No DJ. Minor shelf/edge wear to soiled/stained red cloth boards with lion head stamped in gilt (worn) on front board, Photographic endpapers, TEG (top edge gilt). No previous owner markings - all pages and all 49 plates are present. Previous owner did not know the proper way to separate pages and as a result, several pages have torn edges and chipping, the most serious is page 29-30 which has several large chips (about 1 inch). Thankfully the book was published with deep margins and none of the text is affected. Laid in is a promotional card which states: This book will serve to give you some impressions of my most interesting adventures in Africa. Yours sincerely, Frederick B. Patterson President. The National Cash Register Company. Well-illustrated account describes his Safari in Kenya, where he hunted for lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and gazelle. His guide was professional hunter (and lover of Isak Dinesen) Denys Finch Hatton. One of the few books to have a photograph of Denys Finch Hatton (page 76) and a fair amount of information on him. Author Frederick Patterson was the son of John Henry Patterson founder of NCR (National Cash Register). During World War I, Frederick enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army. He later became a lieutenant in the Air Service. Frederick commanded the 15th Photographic Air Squadron in France. In 1922, Frederick succeeded his father as president of NCR. In 1923, Frederick raised money from local citizens to purchase 5,000 acres of land for an air force base which became "Wright-Patterson Air Force Base" (Fairborn, Ohio). Mr. Patterson was president of the National Aeronautical Association from 1923 to 1924. Frederick enjoyed hunting big game. He made a 5 month hunting trip in 1928 to then British East Africa. This book chronicled that hunting trip. Sold as a reading/research copy only. Respectable First Edition with related ephemera and plenty of charm left in it. LOC SSM-05
