Small, slim 8vo.; [6], 138pp. Original teal cloth, the spine stamped in gilt within a red title block, top edge stained brown; in a red and cream typographic dust jacket lettered in black. A very good first edition book in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Newspaper photos of a young Auden and Spender as Oxford undergrads taped to dedication page and discoloring the facing page. Previous owner's name and address on front pastedown, with address crossed out and new address written in. Auden received a Pulitzer Prize for this piece, which served as the basis for Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 2 (1948). Precedes the English edition by one year. Bloomfield & Mendelson A29a.
Synopsis
The Age of Anxiety: A Baroque Eclogue was first published in 1947 by Random House. This book is a long poem written in six parts, the story deals with man's quest to find substance and identity in a shifting and increasingly industrialized world. Set in a wartime bar in New York City, Auden centers around four characters - Quant, Malin, Rosetta, and Emble - to explore and develop his themes.
