Bernard Ireland (died 2019) was a British naval engineer, editor of Jane's and writer on naval matters. Ireland was educated at the Royal Dockyard School, Portsmouth, and the University of Southampton. Ireland worked for the Defence Research Agency in ship research. Bernard Ireland has spent his career at the British Admiralty in the field of hydrodynamic research and ship design. He wrote or co-authored 47 books, as well as contributing to journals and partworks on subjects related to ships and naval campaigns. He was the author of Jane's Battleships of the 20th Century, Jane's Naval History of World War Two, Warfare in the Age of Sail, War at Sea 1914-45, Navies of the West, The Battle of the Atlantic, Warships of the World: Major Classes, History of Ships and War in the Mediterranean, in addition to may other titles. This is an illustrated history of aircraft carriers of the world, from zeppelin and seaplane carriers to V/STOL and nuclear-powered carriers, featuring over 170 warships and over 500 photographs. This work examines the evolution of the aircraft carrier, from the first flights from ships in World War I, developments during the inter-war years and World War II, through to carriers used in Suez, Vietnam and the Falklands. Specification boxes provide at-a-glance information about each carrier's country of origin, date of commissioning, displacement, dimensions, types of aircraft carried, armament, machinery and performance. This also includes fascinating quotations from military leaders, plus a glossary explaining key military, nautical, naval and maritime terms and abbreviations.
