About This Item

Salisbury,, 1983. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket.. About fine.. 8vo. pp. 127. Original publisher's blue cloth lettered gilt on spine. Red dust jacket lettered white on spine and upper cover. Presentation copy: 'Colin Welch from Martyn Skinner. December 1983.' Handwritten signed letter from Martyn Skinner to Colin Welch loosely inserted written on headed notepaper from Ilex House, Fitzhead, Taunton dated December 26th 1983 and consisting of about 125 words in which Skinner says he remembers Welch saying in a letter that he admired his poetry. He encloses some specimens of his poetry and goes on to admire Welch's articles in 'The Spectator' particularly the one about Beatlemania. He thinks 'our attitudes to the general state of things seem largely to correspond.' Colin Welch (1924 1997) political journalist, satirist and deputy editor of 'The Daily Telegraph' also wrote under the pen name Peter Simple in which he mocked and abused the so-called permissive society. Martyn Skinner (1906 1993) was a writer who won both the Hawthornden Prize and the Heinemann Prize for Literature for 'Letters to Malaya', extracts of which are included in 'Alms for Oblivion'. Small mark on half-title and title page, otherwise about fine. 0859551032
