A scarce to see early edition.Complete in three volumes.ESTC citation number T133845.Half-title to Volume III only.The popular sentimental novel by Henry Fielding.'Amelia' follows the marriage of the eponymous character and Captain William Booth, a young couple who face many hardships in their first days of marriage. A charming domestic novel that mostly takes place in London in 1733.Fielding is best remembered today for his comic novel 'Tom Jones', and for helping to found London's first full-time police force, the Bow Street Runners. He based the character of Amelia on his late wife, Charlotte Craddock, who died in 1744 after ten years of marriage.Bookplate of Walter Strickland to the front paste downs. Strickland was nicknamed the 'Anarchist Baronet', known for espousing radical causes around the world, as an anti-British and anti-imperialist man.Handwritten note tipped in to the recto of the front endpaper of Volume I, 'Andrew Miller the bookseller gave Fielding 800 for the copy eight of his Amelia'. In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbing and light marks to the boards and spines. A little loss to the head and tail of the spines, heavier to the tail of the spine of Volume II. . Minor bumping to the extremities. Lacking the spine labels. Cracks to the joints. Loss of leather to the front board of Volume I. A very small puncture hole to the tail of the front board of Volume II. Front hinge of Volumes I and III and the hinges of Volume II are starting but firm. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Note tipped-in to the recto of the front endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spotting, a little heavier to the first and last few pages. Worming to the tail of the text of Volume I from page 91 to the rear paste down, increasing in size to the rear but never affecting text. Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
