About This Item

Baltimore, Md: The Lord Baltimore Press, 1937. Hardcover. VG- (Some slight wear and soiling to cover, may have mild foxing.). 2 vols. Brown cloth. 1106 pp., 2114 bw illus.; set weighs 9 lbs. "This book is intended for those who have not made a study of American antique furniture, and do not wish to do so, but are fond of it and desire to know the principal periods and styles. Such knowledge is best acquired from many illustrations, with explanatory remarks; and it is hoped that the large number of illustrations here presented, showing the changes in styles in successive periods, will make the subject clear and interesting. The plan of the book requires the subject to be brought down to about the year 1840, which is later than the period of fine antiques. ... In this book for amateurs almost all of the pieces shown are of the kind which are found in private houses." (preface) This extensive information in two volumes covers furniture, identification, care, collections, styles, and auctions.
