France: The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation through Trianon Press, 1959. cardboard slipcase. Trianon Press. folio. cardboard slipcase. variously paginated. First edition, limited to 1000 copies. The Tsisab Ravine in the Brandberg Mountain range of South-West Africa, which is the site of the famous 'White Lady of the Brandberg," is also the site of a great number of painted rock shelters clustered together nearby. This volume is the outcome of the labors of Abbe Breuil and his companions who camped in the Tsisab Ravine in 1947 and again in 1948 in order to study the sites and to take tracings directly from the rock face. The Abbe's color copies are reproduced by the collotype and hand-stencil process in 77 plates, including one double-page, and are documented by 50 photographs reproduced in monochrome collotype, including two double-page photo-montages. Russell (1807-1866), a recent transplant to Racine Wisconsin from Vermont where he is traveling to settle up his affairs, writes about the coming election and express his confidence in Winfield Scott as the Whig Presidential candidate. "Men west are beginning seriously to feel the effects of this kind of free trade... We want a Tariff that is good for something. We want appropriations for Internal improvements. A.C. & will have it. Scott is the man for us. You know and feel it. He will carry Wisconsin without do[u]bt. Party lines are all being broken. Men will look to their interest anyhow."
