Early ownership of E. L. Halstead. A popular and influential garden book by this famous writer, reformer, "muck-raker" and politician. Cobbett wrote the book "to cause the art of gardening to be better understood and practiced than it now is in America." William Cobbett (1762-1835), the son of a peasant f armer, makes clear his attitude toward gardeners in the preface: "The inside of a labourer's house, his habits, his qualities as a workman, and almost his morality, may be judged from the appearance of his garden. If that be neglected, he is, nine times out of ten, a sluggard or a drunkard, or both."
