1877. London: Chapman and Hall, 1877. Original terra-cotta cloth with front cover and spine decorated in black, spine stamped in gilt and black.
First Edition, published at the end of this novel's serialization in Temple Bar magazine. "THE AMERICAN SENATOR will be read for the sake of its opening chapters, which set before the reader in a few pages the whole geographical and social pattern of an English county; for the sake of its hunting episodes, which are among the best not only in Trollope, but in the whole of English fiction; and for the sake of Arabella Trefoil, a masterly study of a girl without a heart..." [Sadleir]. The name of the American senator who comes to England with Arabella and her mother? -- Elias Gotobed. The primary binding for this title is pinkish-ochre cloth decorated in black -- but this copy is in one of five secondary and remainder bindings cited by Sadleir (four three-volume bindings with the gilt spine lettering type-set rather than blocked from a brass, plus a three-volumes-in-one binding that does have the gilt imprinted by a brass). This copy -- with no imprint at the foot of the spines -- is in the "binding i" described on pp 6-7 of Sadleir's Addenda and Corrigenda. The volumes are in very good condition, with minor wear at the sides and ends of the spines, and faint discoloration on the Vol I boards. The original pale-yellow endpapers are original, though one is slightly cracked. Sadleir (TROLLOPE) 46 and Addenda pp 6-7.
