First line

The Puritans who settled in New England have been held up to posterity as haters of music, so that the dawn of America's musical heritage was long darkened by this sinister shadow.

From the rear cover

'A landmark in American musical historiography.... Indispensable for music teachers and scholars; moreover, it is accessible to the layman.... An exhaustive bibliography, excellent discography, and rarely seen illustrations and photographs add to its attractiveness.'

About the author

The late Gilbert Chase taught at Tulane University and the University of Texas at Austin, and was former chairman of the Inter-American Music Council. His books include Contemporary Art in Latin America, A Guide to the Music of Latin America, and The Music of Spain.
