About This Item

Port Washington, NY: Ashley Books, Inc.. Offered is a signed first edition, first printing of "Among the Carnivores" written by Daniel Curzon and published in 1978 by Ashley Books, Inc. out of Port Washington, New York. A hardcover in dust jacket containing 378 pages, this novel is listed in Ian Young's magnificent bibliography "The Male Homosexual in Literature" (1981) as containing primary gay male content (Young 883*). From the dust jacket, "Jock Jones makes no secret of his homosexuality when he is hired as a creative writing instructor at Fresno State University. Jock sets out to destroy the taboos and even begins a gay studies class. He wants to challenge the mania that decrees that one must be heterosexual or perish. He wants to climb above the sham of professional bible thumpers like Anita Bryant, who uses the prestige of Florida juice to campaign against homosexuals (and change legislation). Jock is not a bad guy but he has to be destroyed because he has come out of the closet and this endangers others. In a world where orange juice Queens and State Senators (in real life, Senator Briggs of California reintroduced his bill to ban gay teachers), Jock doesn't fare too well." Signed and dated (December 29, 1979) by the author to the first inside free (blank) page. Condition: (Hardcover) - three short scuffs along board edges; very light wear to board corners; (Dust Jacket) - lightly age-toned; crease down mid-portion of front and rear covers; periodic small edge chips, particularly along upper edge of dust jacket. . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1978.
