1879 Ancient & Modern MAGIC Tricks Illusions Maskelyne Conjuring Mediums Occult

Arprey Vere's "Ancient and Modern Magic" is a rare 19th-century study of the magic illusions by magicians Maskelyne and Cooke. This book discussed the differences between stage magic and spiritualism noting that modern magic was rooted in 'mechanical magic' According to Nead,

"modern magic's effects were achieved primarily through the laws of mechanical motion…created solely through the artful management of electricity, acoustics, and hydraulics'. (Nead, p.83)

Vere provides context for the history of performance magic as well as giving instruction on how to construct magic props and equipment. He also includes notes on the practices of mediums and philosophical doctors.

Few works go through as many editions as Henry Gray's 'Anatomy.' In 2015, "Gray's Anatomy" reached its 41st edition, and even still it is "considered to be the most comprehensive and detailed textbook on the subject!" (O'Neal, USATODAY, 2005.) This rare late 19th-century edition is considered exceedingly rare, and editions printed by Lea Brothers are very desirable to doctors and medical students still today.
