Very good in original brown quarter-morocco, lettered in gilt with sword and shield illustration tooled in blind on spine, over dark green cloth, beveled boards; green endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges rough-cut. Front and rear hinges neatly fortified with green book-repair tape. Very light wear to extremities and very light soiling throughout. Gilt titling bright, handsome leather binding well preserved; chromolithographs powerful and bright.. Folio. 32.5 x 41.5 cm. [iv], 26, [iv] pp. + plates. Fully illustrated with 54 chromolithographic plates from James Drummond, each accompanied by a leaf describing the illustration. With an introduction and descriptive notes by Joseph Anderson (1832-1916), Scottish antiquarian who served as custodier of the National Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh from 1869 until his death. Color plates made from Drummond's drawings, which here include targets, broad swords, dirks, glaives, war axes, bagpipes, harps, among several other implements. Limited edition, hand-numbered on recto of half-title: 308 of 500 copies printed. Very nice copy of a singular and scarce title.
