Description

Milan: Olivetti/ Electa, 1992. Hardcover. NF/VG; dj has one small tear at top of spine (repaired on inside). Beige cloth boards with gold lettering; color-illustrated dj with white lettering; 499 pp. with 330 illustrations (100 in color). Text in English. Catalogue from the exhibition held at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Met Museum in 1992. An enormous undertaking with 7 main essays on Mantegna, his prints and paintings, techniques, contemporaries and more. With a 7-part catalogue: Early Works, Devotional Works, Descent into Limbo, Classical and Mythological Themes, Labours of Hercules, Portraits, Triumphs of Caesar, Paintings in Grisaille, and The Studiolo and Late Themes. Included are appendices, lists of lenders, a bibliography and a index of names and works. The catalogue, including 154 works, sets out to explore the creative mind and remarkable genius of Mategna by presenting, in roughly equal measure, the drawings that are the basis of his creativity, the paintings on which his fame is based, and the engravings by which his ideas were widely disseminated throughout later centuries.
