About the author

Bernard S. Bachrach is Professor of History at the University of Minnesota. Among his recent books are Fulk Nerra, the Neo-Roman Consul, 987-1040 (University of California Press) and Early Carolingian Warfare: Prelude to Empire (University of Pennsylvania Press). Steven Fanning is Associate Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the author of A Bishop and His World Before the Gregorian Reform: Hubert of Angers, 1006-1047 (American Philosophical Society) and Mystics of the Christian Tradition (Routledge).
