Complete with all plates and pages. Bindings are mixed. Seven volumes light tan full leather (goat?) with Yapp style bindings. Marbled endpapers and edges. Two half leather, marbled board bindings and one museum library rebind (~75 years old). The interiors are excellent except for vol. 6 Mandibulata which has water toning upper outer corner affecting last quarter of volume and final two plates. Haustellata volume 4 has museum library stamp on title page and plates are in a back pocket; has interesting old scientific marginalia. The value here is in the matching 7 volumes (Haustellata 1-3; Mandibulata 1-4). First appearance of Darwin's work in print. See Freeman pages 19-20. First editions of both volumes. Murray, London, 1827 & 1828. Volumes were married a few years ago and rebound in matching modern fine bindings of black quarter leather and marbled boards with silver gilt imprints on spine. Quite sharp on the shelf. Overall condition of pair is Very Good. These volumes led quite different lives so condition issues are worth noting. Volume 1 has title page inscription "Montego Bay 25 April 1834" which gives this volume a cool history of having been in Jamaica. Sadly the Jamaican owner's name was clipped off top of title page depriving us of knowing who it belonged to. Dedication page is also clipped at top. The rest of the volume can be fairly described as Near Fine: pages are bright and supple, no writing, tears, folds or other issues. Volume 2 has different issues. It was subject to legal troubles with many copies destroyed or altered. Which I suspect is why it arrived here disbound with a typewritten facsimile of the title page (circa 1940's, now laid in) and missing half title and last page. Those have been replaced with professional quality facsimiles. Pages are generally toned, paper remains supple. Small wormholes in 4 leaves (p.497-504) affecting a few letters but not affecting readability or integrity of paper. Pencil marginalia present in first 150 pages and in appendix. Single ink correction at bottom of p.3. Marginalia author appears well informed and was likely a Jamaican resident. For example on p. 91 a character named Tacky is mentioned and marginalia notes "Tacky Bridge" is named as place of Tacky's demise - a piece of information not in the book. That suggests marginalia'ist' spent time in Jamaica and possibly this volume did too. Pagination: Vol. 1: xix, [1], 604, modern blanks. Vol. 2: xii, 505, errata, modern blanks. Feel free to inquire. Please see images of the books you will receive. Notes: Author provides comprehensive history of Jamaica which necessarily includes much on slavery, pirates and colonialism. Bridges is identified as 'pro-slavery' but see V.2, p.504 where he describes slavery as "odious." His view on slavery was complex and is best understood by reading the book. Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. 1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

Her husband Joseph Morrell Dodge had a long and distinguished career and tried to help reform Europe but later wound up as financial advisor to Douglas MacArthur in the economic revitalization of Japan. This edition is in very good condition internally. Photos of Ikebana arrangements by the famous Japan Ikebana master. A gift given to Julia Jeffers Dodge and placed in her library. 38 single sided (double page but other side blank) on high quality Japan paper with photo examples of Ikebana, black and white. A rare publication.
