Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 1st Edition,2nd Impression May 1914; x, 149 pages, illustrated, frontispiece with tissue guard, 74 b/w photos. Original covers. Shelf wear, spine faded, rear end paper splitting, age toning and some minor foxing, contents clean. George Levick was a British Antarctic explorer and naval surgeon. He accompanied Scott to Antarctica (1910-1913), having the role of surgeon and zoologist. He photographed extensively throughout the expedition. Levick formed part of the Northern Party and spent the summer of 1911 1912 at Cape Adare studying the Adelie penguin rookery, the largest Adelie penguin colony in the world .He was the first person to study a full breeding season of Adelie penguins. His ground breaking observations of the courting, mating, and chick-rearing behaviours of these birds are recorded in this remarkable book, accompanied with extraordinary photographs.
