This has been re-cased into hard back boards with the original card covers bound-in. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. Contains [viii] 140 printed pages of Dutch text with monochrome portrait frontispiece and is the only existing painting of van Leeuwenhoek. Haaxman was a grandson of Antony van Leewenhoek's sister Margaret. This copy was gifted to The Royal Dutch Entomological Society [with small stamp inside] by P. C. T. Snellen, and has his signature in vague pencil writing to the top margin of the front cover. P. C. T. Snellen was an entomologist and author of the standard work on Dutch Butterflies [Butterflies of the Netherlands, written in 1867]. Member of the P.B.F.A.
