Stroud, Glos: Stroud News and Journal, [1958]. First printing. Hardcover. Good+. Duodecimo in green cloth with gilt spine and front board. pp 149. Signed and inscribed by the author on the ffep: "To A. F. Downey Jun. [?] with / best wishes from / Gerry Anderson / March 24/59." The first published work on Kriegspiel problems, which is still widely cited and recognized today among problemists. In a July 2006 article, the Problemist called it "a strong candidate for the title of 'most original chess problem book ever published. The work was apparently held in high esteem by Bobby Fischer as well: a member of the British Chess Problem Society once wrote to Anderson, saying: "I write because I must have another copy of Are There Any? I had solved only up into the thirties when last night I incautiously carried it down to the Marshall Club to show it to Jack Collins. Then, seeing it in Jacks hands, Bobby Fischer pounced upon it in great excitement and before the evening was over the two of them had so made it theirs, were so comically oblivious of the mere owner, that I hadnt the heart to explain that I had brought it to show, not to bestow." The Australian-born Anderson was a pilot in WWI in the 88 Squadron and later became a diplomat in the Queens service, but was reknowned in chess circles as a master composer. Anderson was also reputed to be the last person to have played Alexander Alekshin in tournament play in Lisbon (1946) before the latter's untimely death. Front board has several abrasive scuffs to cloth and there is a miniscule tear to the top of the ffep (not affecting signature), else very good. A very scarce book. OCLC lists only 9 copies in libraries worldwide. Betts, 39-21.

[signed by Max Euwe] Dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Max Euwe Chess Club of Amsterdam tipped on front paste down. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5574) First edition. The A.V.R.O. 1938 was a double-round tournament held in November 1938 under the sponsorship of the Dutch wireless company, Algemene Verenigde Radio Omroep. The participants, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Capablanca, Euwe, Fine, Flohr, Keres and Reshevsky, included the reigning World Champion and all his potential challengers. The sponsors intended the event to be regarded as an unofficial Candidates tournament, and the winner (or the runner-up in the case of a victory by Alekhine) was promised financial backing for a World Championship match. From the library of Rimington Wilson. (van der Linde: 1091; Betts: 33-38) First edition.Frank Healey was a famous English chess player, but above all a composer of chess problems. He published in 1866 a collection of 200 chess own compositions, which he regarded as decidedly aesthetic, indeed poetic achievements. "Problems are true poetry of chess. The same depth of imagination, the same keen perception of beauty, the same fertility of invention, we ask the poet, can be found in another form in the humble labors of problem composers. Certainly one can say, without the analogy to span that the 32 stones representing the alphabet of the composer, while the chess is his paper, and finally resulting positions can be quite compared with as many stanzas."James Wilson Rimington-Wilson (1822-1877) was one of the great collectors of books… Read More

iv+252 pages with diagrams, photographs and index. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Signed by Yasser Seirawan. First edition. The 1990 WCC match between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov was held from October 8 to December 30. The match locale was split, with the first 12 games played in New York, USA, and the final 12 in Lyons, France. The prize fund was three million dollars, with 5/8 going to the winner. In case of a tie, the prize fund would be shared equally with Kasparov retaining the title.Unlike the 1987 WCC cycle in which Karpov was seeded directly into the final candidate match, this time he was only reserved a spot in the quarter finals, and thus had to win three mini-matches in order to face Kasparov. This he accomplished by defeating Johann Hjartarson 3½ to 1½, Artur Yusupov 4½ to 3½ and Jan Timman 6½ to 2½.Perhaps as a psychological ploy, Karpov suggested a last minute change to the rules in the pre-match press conference. Karpov argued… Read More

205 pages with plates, diagrams and tables. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") issued in red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front cover. Edited with commentary by John C Owen. Notes by Charousek, Marcoczy and other contemporaries. First edition. This international tournament, held in honor of the 1000th anniversary of Hungary's turbulent existence was the first one ever staged on Magyar soil. Prominent masters from Russia, the United States, Austria, Germany, France and the host nation were on hand to participate in the historic proceedings. When Gyula Makovetz, one of the invited players, was unable to attend, Maroczy, brilliant second-place winner at Nuremberg eight weeks earlier, was given the chance to play. Unfortunately, he suffered a disappointing reversal in form (+4 -6 =2) and finished outside the prizewinner list. The tournament was a bitterly fought affair between two uncompromising warriors, Tchigorin and Charousek - both scoring 8 1/2 out of 12 points (+7 -2 =3). In their seventh-round… Read More

There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The 1958 contest was held at the Hotel Provincial in Mar del Plata. and is part of an iconic beachfront complex, built in 1946 by the celebrated architect Alejandro Bustillo.
Eighteen contenders battled for the trophy and placed in descending order: Bent Larsen from Denmark capture first with 12 points ahead of William Lombardy from America with 11. In a three way tie for third was… Read More
