He was appointed as Vicar Apostolic to Santa Fe, in 1851, which at that time, included all of present day New Mexico and Arizona, and a large area lying in Colorado, Utah and Nevada. Archbishop Lamy was the historic figure Willa Cather used for her novel, DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP..
